Trigger

In the fan community, a trigger is something found in a piece of fanwork that causes extreme emotional stress. This is generally because it causes someone to have a negative remembrance or reaction based on a past experiences. Subjects which some fans consider to be triggers would include:
Triggers are generally considered more severe and worth warning for than squicks, which are more a matter of personal taste and preference. The differences between the two were discussed at length during Privilege wank in 2009, where many argued that while it might be nice to include warnings for squicks, it is not necessary the way it might be for certain triggers.
