[edit] Introduction
Uke is a Japanese word that is commonly used by English-speaking fans to describe the submissive member of a relationship. The seme is stereotypically more masculine than the uke.
The position of characters in relationships is a constant source of problems in practically every fandom. In slash, some fans believe that the man who "bottoms" loses his masculinity. Uke is thus occasionally used as an insult, describing a character who has been turned "girly."

[edit] Historical Definitons
The following term dates to December 2001 in the Harry Potter fandom:
- Uke: A description of a character's position in sexual encounter. As opposed to seme, the "bottom" in a sexual relationship.[1]
The following definition dates to February 2002 in anime fandom:
- Uke - this is another term related to YAOI. In Japanese, uke means, "To receive". The uke is the passive one in the relationship. In *ahem* terms...the uke is the one on the bottom....*blush blush*[2]
The following definition dates to March 2002 in the anime fandom:
- Uke: the guy "on the bottom" during sex. Or the guy getting inserted into.
- There are all sorts of conditions for being a typical seme or uke. Aestheticism's page (linked above) goes into it in more detail. I don't really like convention, though, so I just make up my seme/uke preferences myself (so do the Japanese, apparently, because I've seen quite a few QuatrexTrowa doujinshi...).
- The seme and uke are separated by an 'x.' So, for DuoxHeero, Duo's the seme and Heero's the uke. ^_^ [3]
The following definition dates to May 2006 in the anime fandom:
- The bottom in a yaoi pairing.[4]
The following definition dates to September 2006 in anime fandom:
- Uke - submissive partner [5]
