I joined fandom online in 1997. At the time, my interest was mostly in reading and writing, though I also dabbled in fanart. Usenet groups were still the way to go for fandom-related stuff. Internet archives (the first I participated in being The Ultimate Mozenrath Site, which has since gone offline) were just starting to become popular with fen, as the Usenet groups were becoming more populated, more cluttered, and harder to search. These archives, such as the UMS, were organized as one-stop shops targeted to specific fen, so that they wouldn't have to search lists and lists of fics for a particular character, genre or type of fic.
I am one fan who can lay claim to having been booted off of all of the major free webspace providers on the Internet. :D I have been writing and posting adult-content stories since before I was an adult, and the Internet community in general has had a long-standing policy against posting adult content on free servers. Some PAID webspace providers even have clauses against adult content in their ToS. Post adult content on your website, and you get ToSsed. Believe me, I've been ToSsed...and ToSsed...and ToSsed.
FanFiction.Net was the first multi-fandom archive I stumbled on. It was great for a while, then the kidlets stumbled in, and the place went to hell. It's a repetitive pattern that plagues fan archives, and it gets worse with each passing year as I get older and crankier and the kidlets get snottier, brattier, and more self-serving. When the archives and forum at MediaMiner.Org opened in October 2001, I was the first person (aside from the owners/testers) to join. Like most of the first site members, the infamous MediaMiner.Org spider had spidered my work on FanFiction.Net, and I received an e-mail inviting me to join. It seemed sort-of spammy, because it was a mass e-mail, but it was an invitation to a new archive and FanFiction.Net was quickly sliding downhill, so I checked it out and signed up for the site that night.
With a brief hiatus due to conflicts with other mods who are no longer even members of MediaMiner.Org and which I don't like to think about, I have stayed with MediaMiner.Org consistently since then. I am currently a site moderator as well as a Super Sienna Moderator on the forums, and have been for several years now. I'm still a fan fiction writer and fan artist, though much less prolific than I was before I returned to college. I still archive my works on MediaMiner.Org and have recently returned to FanFiction.Net. I dabble in LiveJournal comms, but have been largely put off by wank and Thumper Rules regarding posting.
Fandoms
Please Note: I am only as "active" in these fandoms as the material I post. As I said above, my actual contributions to communities is largely lurking and moderating. I've lost interest in being a "social" community member ever since fen decided they all needed to be batshit insane.
