Hello!

Hi there, I'm Catherine. I created the Duran Duran page here while I was still anonymous, and keep hoping to add more detail to it one of these days, although I'm not as heavily involved in the fandom as I used to be (my website is sadly out of date). You are doing a fantastic job here, which I'd like to support in the face of the oddness of the OTW wank.  :)

These days I also work for Wikia, a free wiki hosting service. We have hundreds of wikis for various media properties (TV, movies, anime, books, and so on) and some for fan fiction specifically (see Category:Fanon -- naming these things "Fanon" was a fad at Wikia for a while, but we're trying to gradually rename things to "fan fiction" as I didn't think the term was being used appropriately). Anyway, I thought I'd let you know, in case you'd like to incorporate the creation of these wikis into your history and/or talk to the wiki admins about their work.

I'd also like to know if you'd object to us placing external links from your pages to our wikis -- i.e., a link to harrypotter.wikia.com or harrypotterfanon.wikia.com (or both) from your Harry Potter page. We definitely don't want to spam your wiki, but I would hope these might be useful to your readers as links to other ongoing fan activity. We'd be happy to encourage our users to return the favor on the appropriate pages in their wikis.

It looks like you have things well in hand here, but please know that Wikia would be pleased to host the FanHistory wiki in the future, if you ever get tired of dealing with hosting and MediaWiki maintenance, extensions and upgrades.

Best wishes to you!
CatherineMunro

Hi Laura... Catherine told me that you guys talked, and it's okay to add some Wikia links. Please let me know if there's any problem with the links that I'm adding... I don't want to do too much, and interfere with the community here. Thanks! Toughpigs 12:24, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
So long as they fit with the existing content, I really don't mind. Fan History Wiki is sort of about being a resource for people to find communities and to find out about their histories. I've got a lot of links for places like FanFiction.Net, FanLib and FanWorksFinder built in all over the place. That doesn't even get into the linking to a whole slew of LiveJournal communities, MySpace groups and mailing lists. Where is the community? What are they doing? It helps define the scope of fandom. --Laura 13:09, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

Digg Extension for MediaWiki

Hi Laura,

A while ago you left a message on my Wiki about a Digg extension I was writing here

It is now complete! I see you already have a bookmarking sidebar so maybe you no longer require this. However you can get the extension here if you still want it!

Regards, Ed

Thanks. :) I'll take a look at it when I get back from my vacation. I like the sidebar I have but like to play around with things on Fan History Wiki. :) --Laura 00:13, 23 October 2007 (CDT)

Usage Guide

Is there a link on this wiki for how you prefer to do things? I have looked and looked and can't find one, and you don't seem to use the normal wikipedia conventions.--Frito 13:04, 2 January 2008 (CST)

Fandom History Wiki Folks.

Hi there. I came across your Wiki today via the metafandom LJ, and wanted to say "kudos" for creating something badly needed in various fandoms. I'm from a comics fanfic background myself, and I know there's been many the discussion about creating somewhere to keep all the history that's floating around out there, especially since the closure of CFAN. There's a few of us old timer comics fans who are really keen to get involved and fill in the gaps.

I am a bit confused, however, by the structure of the comics section. Comics fandom is a bit different to most in that we have one sort of huge umbrella "comics fandom" which is then broken down into several different smaller fandoms (DC, Marvel, etc), which is again broken down into small fandoms - for DC, Batverse, Vertigo, JLU, etc). I was wondering if it was possible to do a bit of a reorganise so things are easier to find, using ten categories under "Comics Fandom" - Marvel, DC, Vertigo, Image, Dark Horse, International, Small Press & Independent, Internet Press Series, Metafiction and Roleplaying. Every article that currently exists would fit under one of these (or under "Comics Fandom" specifically), and I think it would help a lot with getting people to contribute and with people using the site as a resource. It'd also reduce the pressure on your servers, since there's a lot of one-article categories that could become part of something larger.

If you're wondering about my experience with Wiki, here's the link to the RPG Wiki maintained by myself and several others - http://x-journal.net/Wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page As you might notice, I'm something of a Wiki fiend. ;)

Any way, if you could let me know if that's okay, I'd appreciate it? I'm quite excited by Fandom History, and I'd love to get involved.

Rossi.

Abbreviations

Hey Laura, the other day I was working on disambiguation pages for letters (y'know, like how "H" stands for a bunch of different things) and I was wondering if the letter codes really need their own articles. Like does H for hentai need a page separate from Hentai? The original Wikipedia doesn't give abbreviations and acronyms their own pages. Your thoughts? -Jae 20:41, 14 March 2008 (CDT)

I was making disambigs at one point probably almost two years ago after I started creating pages for letters. I did that because I came out of Usenet fandom, from Gossamer, from mailing lists where heading codes and the use of letters was all important. I wouldn't have a problem with having disambig pages for letters being say A stands for Jonathan Archer or something like that instead of a separate page like A is a header code for Jonathan Archer. And it would be nice to get whatever is done as consistent as there are some problems with consistency in the article and category formatting. :( (Category formatting, the individual date pages, fandom category listing which I'm working on fixing.) --Laura 20:55, 14 March 2008 (CDT)
OK, groovy. That's exactly what I was going to do, so I'll get on it as soon as I can. Still busy with the job and apartment search, unfortunately. -Jae 11:45, 17 March 2008 (CDT)
I can understand the job thing. Not a big deal I dun think.
I'm going to try to keep on the ball with the category creation hell as we're trying to get User:FanFictionNetBot working right to add categories and it might be forcing some interesting category issues regarding needing to create a lot... and FanFiction.Net names don't always match with names used on Fan History. We'll see how well the bot works. *babbles* --Laura 11:49, 17 March 2008 (CDT)
Oh, also, congrats on the increase in traffic! -Jae 20:42, 14 March 2008 (CDT)
Thanks. Been really working on promoting Fan History recently at various places, e-mailing sites and blogs and asking them to link, posting links on orkut, fanpop, bebo, LiveJournal, stumbleupon, digg, etc. And some of those links and people finding the site through search engines have led to people posting links to the site on their own. It feels like Fan History is getting closer to self generating traffic. Almost or somewhat. *crosses fingers* But increased traffic feels like YAY!
If you're looking at Google Anayltic's stats, they look all screwed up some how. :/ Either that or Google isn't updating them repeatedly during the day like it was at some point. --Laura 20:55, 14 March 2008 (CDT)

Cleaning up bot stuff

Hey Laura, was looking at Special:Wanted pages and noticed a lot of the "mess" caused by the bot (so least as far as there being differences in how things are named, for instance "Law & Order" vs "Law and Order".

Is it worth punting around and putting some time into fixing these? At least creating some redirects? Woud be the kind of semi-mindless thing I wouldn't mind working on a bit.--Sidewinder 22:34, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

That would be cool. :) I've been pretty much putting off doing it... And the bot which did that is unlikely to ever run again. :( So yeah, fixing that up would be awesome. :) --Laura 22:49, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

There are two band mis-spellings that I've noticed. Back Street Boys (s/b Backstreet Boys) and Megadeath (s/b Megadeth)

--Kamikazelover 16:43, 18 April 2008 (EDT)

Should be fixed now. --Laura 16:57, 18 April 2008 (EDT)
Megadeath was fixed in December 2007 actually. The misspelled version redirects to the correctly spelled version: see? There are a number of redirects for when these problems have been caught. :/ --Laura 17:00, 18 April 2008 (EDT)

Heya, Laura. Thanks so much for putting this up! SLWatson 23:57, 22 April 2008 (EDT)

Thanks. :) And thanks for your contibutions. If you're ever interested in becoming a moderator, let me know. --Laura 07:17, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
So... what goes into moderation? Since I've been all over this thing since I woke up. SLWatson 12:13, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
Mostly, the advantage is that you can delete pages with out having to ask. (Fan History doesn't have Wikipedia's deletion guidelines. The general policy for spelling errors and other pages is to delete if they really shouldn't be there. The exception are people articles which, if people ask for them to be deleted, they generally need to provide a reason other than "Because." ) Oh, you can also ban people. So if you see some one whole sale removing content, or inserting content like "Jorja Fox sucks! Grissom/Sara fans are delusional! GRISSOM/CATHERINE 4 EVA!" they can be banned. If people blank pages with out asking for the page to be deleted, they can be banned. It is mostly at the discretion of the moderator. --Laura 12:21, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
I'm not too shabby at wiki-working; generally would be good at helping people to format their stuff and properly add pages. But sure, what the heck? I can't promise I'll be on this every day, but I can certainly make myself available to help new folks, to promote and otherwise to do some cleaning/editing/creation. SLWatson 12:50, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
Any help would be appreciated. :) One of the major complaints regarding Fan History is the lack of information (or lack of relevant information) and with only one or two regular contributors, it can be a bit of a pain in the arse to improve that. And User:FanFictionNetBot is adding to some of the category clean up problems. Added to that, I've been accused of sitting on some articles... which is bad because it discourages people from editing some pages so I've mostly been taking a back seat when I see others editing. &babbles& So yeah, any help would be appreciated. You should now be able to delete articles and ban people. :) (And if you're ever in the Chicago area, let me know and I'll treat you to lunch in thanks.) --Laura 12:58, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
If I'm ever in Chicago, I will do take you up on that. SLWatson 23:20, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
