[edit] Fan fiction policy and history

In a post by Baelwolf dated October 18, 1999 to TheTaint's message board, Baelwolf states that Robert Jordan doesn't tolerate fan fiction derived from his work. According to that post Robert Jordan is annoyed by fan fiction because it takes his work, his creation, his property and creates or changes something that he doesn't have planned. According to Baelfwolf, Robert Jordan discussed this a lot during his first few years of writing. [1]

In a post to Idealistic Gamers Unite[2] by Nymeria dated December 8, 2001, [3] she says that Robert Jordan allows no fan fiction but has given blanket permission for all MUDs derived from his work. [4]

Mischa E Gelman in a post to rec.games.roguelike.angband with a subject of "Re: jordan variant" dated June 7, 1998 says that he believed this to be a policy crafted by Jordan and Tor. [5]

Below is a partial timeline of events that took place in this fan community.

  • By February 1995, there had been a sizable number of posts to rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan which contained fan fiction by based on Robert Jordan's books.
  • On September 15, 1998, www.DRAGONMOUNT.com came online. Dragonmount would eventually grow to be the largest and most well known WoT fansite. It's most popular feature is a blog that Robert Jordan updated periodically, answering questions from fans and giving updates regarding his health. Dragonmount is also known for its lively and fragmented message board community.
  • On April 22, 2003, the LiveJournal community silklantern was created. [6]
  • On September 16, 2007, Robert Jordan died. [7]
