White Collar is an American television series which began airing on the USA Network in the fall of 2009. A crime drama starring Matt Bomer as con-man Neal Caffrey and Tim DeKay as Agent Peter Burke, it quickly exploded on the LiveJournal fandom scene upon its premiere. Communities, fanfiction, kink_memes all began appearing soon after the first episode, although kerfluffles also appeared quickly regarding the sexuality of series star Bomer.

The story revolves around Neal Caffrey, a conman who had been captured by FBI agent Peter Burke and sent to prison after a three-year chase for him. He escapes before the end of his sentence to find his girlfriend, who he believes is in trouble. He is recaptured by Burke, but Caffrey this time gives Burke evidence on another case, on the price of having a meeting with Caffrey.
At the meeting, Caffrey proposes that he work with Burke to catch other criminals as part of an agreement for his freedom. Burke agrees, and the series follows what happens next.

- On July 20, 2009, the LiveJournal community caffrey_stokes was created for slash fiction pairing these two characters.[1]
- On September 23, 2009, the LiveJournal community whitecollar_tv was created.[2]
- On October 15, 2009, the LiveJournal community caffrey_burke was created for Caffrey/Burke slash. This had been the former caffrey_stokes community, but it moved after the announcement that the character of Peter Stokes had been renamed Peter Burke.[3],[4]

- Before the end of October 2009, White Collar secrets were already beginning to appear on fandom_secrets. One bemoaned the apparent knee-jerk slashing of Caffrey & Burke, when Burke is supposedly happily married. This lead to some kerfluffling in the comments.[13]
- On November 1, 2009, a post made to whitecollar_tv showed series star Matt Bomer kissing another man in several apparently candid photographs.[14] This lead to homophobic comments being made and people worrying if the fandom, less than two weeks old, was going to face significant issues over the star's sexuality.[15],[16]
