[edit] Introduction

Whumping is a term describing a genre of fanfiction where a character is physically, emotionally and/or mentally abused. Whumping belongs to the subset of fanfiction known as hurt/comfort (which also includes the sub-genres angst (mental hurt/anguish) and smarm (gratuitous comfort and character bonding in a non-slash context)).

This term is not a synonym for character bashing, the portrayal of a character as particularly stupid or foolish.

Whumping refers only to the physical act of causing harm to a character in the course of a story.

This term was originally used in the Stargate fandom, but has spread out to many other fandoms, including: CSI, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, Supernatural, The Dresden Files, Numb3rs, and many others.

[edit] Term Definition

Whumping: A hurt/comfort story centering on a specific character. It is not synonymous with a "get'm" story. "Get'm" stories have a very negative connotation that has never been part of "whumping" as a sub genre.

Danny Whumping is a whimsical term used to refer to fics that involve harming the character Daniel Jackson in some manner. This term is used in the Stargate fandom.

[edit] History

This term was coined by OXBastetXO and Yum@ in the fall of 1999. They were the first to use the term in the Stargate: SG1 fandom.

In February 2001, grasshopper posted on Science Fiction Fantasy Chronicles's forums asking for some help in finding good whumping stories. [1]

In August 2005, CeeKay Sheppard started a discussion on whumping with a lot of pic spam on GateWorld's forums. [2]
