[edit] Introduction
The X-Files Novel Annex was an archive intended to store longer stories (novels) in single text and zip files, in full. It was developed and maintained by Natasha after she retired from the Gossamer project.
[edit] The Archivists
Natasha launched the site on her retirement from the Gossamer project. She actively maintained it for several years, including new novel length fiction, then froze the site as-is. Later, the site passed to lore, who also actively maintained it for several years before freezing the site as-is.
[edit] Archive History
- During the mid to late 1990s, when most Internet users were on some form of dial-up access, downloading large text files was impractical. The Gossamer project bypassed this issue by dividing large novels into text files of 150K apiece. The Novel Annex was intended as a site where these novels divided on the Gossamer sites were available in single files, as text for readers with faster connections, and as text files within zip files for users with slower connections.
- Eventually, since the site was lesser known than Gossamer, it also became the single web-accessible home of many older X-Files novels that had been removed by author request from the more widely known X-Files archives.
