[edit] Introduction
Young Wizards is a eight-book children's fantasy series by author Diane Duane. Its first book, So You Want to Be a Wizard, was published in 1983, and its ninth book is expected to be published in Spring 2008. These eight books focus on the adventures of child wizards Nita Callahan, Kit Rodriguez, and Nita's younger sister Dairine, adventures pursued in combination with the other wizards they come in contact with (including alien and terrestrial non-human wizards). All wizards in this universe are engaged in a fight against the Lone Power, an entity bent on destroying everything. In 1997, Diane Duane began a spin-off trilogy in the same fantasy universe that focused on a set of feline wizards as main characters. The author has relatively high contact with her fans. Her website has offered a forum [1] since 2002, she herself has a livejournal [2], and she keeps a wiki of information about the universe and series [3]. She has published profic in the Star Trek universe, amongst other universes, and she was involved in beginning a Young Wizards story in tandem with fans called Wizards on Call [4] in 2004.
[edit] Main Pairings
This section needs more information.
- Nita/Kit
- Nita/Ronan
- Dairine/Roshaun
- Tom/Carl
Pairings of characters, especially Nita, with the Lone Power have also become relatively popular.
Because of the relative youth of the fandom and of the main characters, this is a fandom in which few fics have higher than a PG-13 rating. Additionally, the pairings are very much canon ships -- even the slash ship of Tom/Carl has very strong canon roots.
[edit] Fandom Size
Young Wizards is a small fandom.
- 2232 registered members at the Young Wizards Discussion Forums as of December 29, 2006.
- 313 fics at fanfiction.net as of December 29, 2006.
- 248 watchers of the general livejournal community youngwizards as of December 29, 2006
- 106 watchers of the fanworks-focused livejournal community myriadwords as of December 29, 2006
As a result of its small size, Young Wizards fandom has been included as a possible fandom in the Yuletide Rare Fandoms Secret Santa Project in 2005 and 2006 (and perhaps earlier); in 2006, five stories were written for the fandom [5]. (In 2005, nothing was written.)
In 2006, 8 people requested fic from the Young Wizards universe for Yuletide, and 30 people offered to write in that universe. These number indicate that the fandom is on the larger side of the rare fandoms included in the challenge. ("Yuletide Requested Fandoms", accessed 29 December 2006.)
[edit] Fandom Timeline
The first book in what is currently an eight-book Young Wizards series was published in 1983; closely on its heels followed three other books, ending with A Wizard Abroad in 1993. There was an eight-year hiatus, but then between 2001 and the present, four more books have been published. A ninth book, A Wizard of Mars, is expected in Spring 2007. The internet presence of the fandom began to develop in 2002 and 2003.

The project appears to have died in September 2005, after having completed eight scenes.
