[edit] Introduction
Yu-Gi-Oh (the correct romanization being 'Yuugiou'), known more commonly as Yugioh, is a manga, anime, and trading card game. The original story revolves around an undersized high school boy named Mutou Yuugi (dub: Yugi Mutoh), who one day solves a puzzle to release the ancient spirit that it contains. Together with the spirit, known simply as 'mou hitori no Yuugi' (the other Yuugi), he uncovers a world of games and supernatural powers. Joining him as main characters are Mazaki Anzu, Jounouchi Katsuya, Honda Hiroto, Kujaku Mai, and Kaiba Seto.
Spin-Offs
The anime also has two spin off shows, respectively titled Yu-Gi-Oh GX and Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds, the second of which is currently airing, and has also spun off several video games.
Dub
The anime is notable for its international dub, which is criticized by a large number of fans for its heavy censorship and 'Americanization' of the series.
Fandom
In fanfiction, the fan base is split into the fans of the dub and the fans of the subbed, original Japanese version. On fanfiction.net, the Yu-Gi-Oh category is the second largest in the anime/manga section, with over 48,000 fanfics currently in the database.
Infamously, many authors within the fandom are fond of writing stories focusing on slash pairings, and its most popular pairings are all of the slash variety. Many fans attest this to the profusion of bishonen and lack of female characters in the series.
