- On May 15, 1999, Entwined Destinies by siewlee became the first Yu Yu Hakusho story published on FanFiction.Net. [1][2]

- On July 4, 2001, the LiveJournal community animefanfic was created. [3] Among the fan fiction communities represented on this community include: Bleach, Clamp, Detective Conan, Fushigi Yuugi, Get Backers, Gravitation, Fruit Basket, Inuyasha, Kodocha, Loveless, Mamono Hunter Yohko, Pokemon, Prince of Tennis, Ranma 1/2, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Samurai Troopers, Shaman King, Tenchi Muyo, Weiss Kreuz, Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu Yu Hakusho.

- On March 9, 2002, the LiveJournal community yuyuhakusho was created. [4]
- On April 12, 2002, El otro hermano. by Lullaby::Nemesis Tsuki became the first Spanish language Yu Yu Hakusho story published on FanFiction.Net. [5][6]

- On May 23, 2004, the LiveJournal community yyh_fanfics was created for people to post Yu Yu Hakusho fan fiction. [9]

- On May 29, 2006, the LiveJournal community 30_dreams was created. [16] It was created so authors could explore the "kiss theme." Fandoms represented by this community include but are not limited to: Card Captor Sakura, Final Fantasy VII, Gravitation, House M.D., Kingdom Hearts, Kyou Kara Maou, Mulan, Yu Yu Hakusho.

- In January 2008, the bebo group KuramaRocks was created. [18]

Unlike many fandoms, there have been relatively few wars between the various shippers. Wars have been mostly based between two or more fanartists and their various supporters based on some sort of offense. There is an animosity between the Kuawabara-supporters with the Kuwabara-bashers, and likewise between the Keiko-supporters and bashers, but this has yet to escalate.
On the other hand, a popular trend with Yu Yu Hakusho authors on FanFiction.Net are Mary-Sue characters. A few users on virtually every fanworks site often complain [] of these Sues, as their creation often involves the easy wooing of Hiei, Kurama, Yusuke, Kuwabara, or a combination of all four via the Sue's "sexy demon qualities". Needless to say, the list of Mary-Sue stories on FanFiction.Net is both absurd and tiring while literate fanworks have been proven more difficult to find. This has become a small source of disgust within the Yu Yu Hakusho fandom.
